Turkey and the Government of Nation Accord (GNA) signed a Maritime Boundary Treaty. This established an economic zone which was exclusive to the Turkish in Mediterranean Sea; meaning that the Turkish had claimed their rights on the resources there.

Turkey intervened in the second Libyan Civil War as early as the fifth of January, 2020 by deploying its military in Libya. Their intervention was seen as an attempt to get resources and maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean as part of the agreement. They aimed to stop the spread of Emirati and Egyptian influence in the Middle East and North Africa. Consequently, Egypt was against the GNA.

The intervention was also a support for the GNA, which included training of their soldiers, air support through UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), the navy, operations for intelligence, etc. A vast portion of Syrian mercenaries were a part of the intervention.

After the approval of the year-decree of sending troops to Libya, Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, voiced the military deployment of Turkish troops in Libya on the 5th of January.. Moreover,  MIT intelligence was found to be the first there. Later on the 25th of February, President Erdoğan confirmed casualties of Turkish and pro-LNA soldiers.

The world was skeptical of Turkey, accusing them of carrying illegal arms to Libya. Consequently, it led one of the vessels being sanctioned by the EU.

The GNA and LNA reached a permanent ceasefire agreement in all areas of Libya. The war then ended on the 24th of  October 2020.
